OTHER COWSIDES

An attractive and versatile material suitable for many products, including upholstery, clothing, bootmaking, handbags, luggage, and small leathergoods of all types.

Trail sides have a 'pull-up' finish giving an interesting colour variation in the leather.

Nevada has an attractively rugged finish showing the animals natural scars and brands. These also have some pull-up in the tannage which adds to their 'lived-in' appearance.

KID LINING LEATHER > GOAT

Known as Kid or Morocco this leather is well regarded for strength and durability. Popular with bookbinders and makers of small goods such as wallets. The close grain means it can be cut very thin and still retain its strength. It is also occasionally used for chair seats.

Ideal for shoe linings, wallets, book bindings - anywhere that a strong, thin leather is required.

SPLIT LEATHER > COW

Split leathers are made by splitting a veg tan hide into two sheets. The lower sheet has a rough surface which is smoothed over with a heavy layer of pigment.

The 2.6 - 2.8 mm split butt is a classic material in the belt trade - at roughly 4.5 ft square a split butt is ideal for sturdy straps and offers good cutting efficiency with minimal waste.

The range of colours and wipe clean surface also make split a popular choice for fetish wear.

SPLIT SUEDE > COW

These suedes are made by splitting a hide into two sheets. The lower sheet has a rough surface but a velvety nap is raised by buffing. It normally has a nap on both sides but the tanner pays more attention to one side and this is regarded as the "right side".

This is a strong material with a wide variety of uses. The lighter weights are used for clothing soft bags and belts. The heavier grades are used for riding chaps and shoes.
